Frequently Asked Questions About Day of Surgery
- Why do I need to arrive two hours before my surgery time?
The staff needs enough time to properly prepare you for your procedure and address any safety concerns that may arise. Our goal is for your surgical experience to be as smooth as possible. You will receive a pre-procedure phone call that will provide you with a designated arrival time. It is crucial to adhere to this time so that your surgery and others that day can proceed as scheduled. Your surgery may be cancelled if you do not arrive at your designated time.
- Can I make plans before or after my surgery?
Please plan to dedicate the entire day to your surgery. It is important not to schedule any commitments before or after the procedure, as the exact surgical schedule may vary due to cancellations or other changes. Recovery time can also vary, based on the individual, the type of procedure, and the medications used. Being able to perform your procedure safely and supporting your recovery are our top priorities.
- Why can’t I eat or drink prior to my surgery?
You must follow the instructions given to you during your pre-procedure phone call to prevent the risk of aspiration (when stomach contents enter the lungs) during your procedure. These guidelines are for your safety. Your surgery may be cancelled if the instructions are not followed.
- Why do I need a responsible adult to accompany me, even if I have a driver?
You may receive anesthesia or sedation during your procedure, making it unsafe to drive yourself home. In the rare event of a medical emergency during the trip home, having someone with you ensures prompt communication and assistance. Drivers of medical transportation services, taxis, or other ride services are not considered responsible parties; therefore, another person needs to accompany you for your safety. Your surgery may be cancelled if you do not have a responsible adult/driver.
- What does my responsible adult/driver need to know about surgery day?
Ideally, your responsible adult/driver will accompany you to the waiting area and stay for the duration of your procedure. We understand there are reasons that may prevent this from happening. In this case, we ask that your driver stay within 30 minutes of the facility and be reachable by phone at all times. Unforeseen changes in surgical times are common and we need to be able to contact your responsible adult/driver.
- Why was I told not to bring any valuables?
We strongly advise that you leave your valuables including all jewelry, money, and electronics at home. All jewelry must be removed prior to going to the operating room. Leaving these items at home will reduce unnecessary risks such as skin injury or loss of items. We also ask that you bring a small personal bag for your belongings on the day of your procedure. While we will store your belongings during your procedure, having your own bag helps with our initiative to reduce waste.
